In this special live episode from ProMat, Kevin chats with Bill Pedriana, newly appointed President of NOBLELIFT North America. The conversation dives deep into Bill’s vision for the future of material handling and NOBLELIFT’s role in shaping it. With decades of industry experience, Bill shares why he joined NOBLELIFT, the company’s global impact as the largest OEM lift truck manufacturer, and how its culture of collaboration uniquely positions it to lead innovation.
The discussion covers what warehouse professionals can expect for the forklift industry in the coming decade, culminating in the debut of Project Alpha, the world’s first open-source forklift. From business strategy to disruptive technology, this episode offers a compelling look into the future of the forklift industry and what NOBLELIFT is doing to lead the charge.
Why the Forklift Industry Needs a Mindset Shift
Pedriana believes the next decade will bring massive disruption to warehousing and that many current business models won’t survive. He emphasizes the need for true collaboration, not just surface-level partnerships.
“There’s so much disruption coming at us that is unpredictable… It’s too big. It’s too disruptive. It’s too unpredictable. So collaboration is key.”
According to Bill, too many manufacturers talk about collaboration from a place of fear or self-preservation. A shift is needed: putting partners first, genuinely helping them grow, and focusing on shared success rather than market protection. That spirit of collaboration is one of the reasons he joined NOBLELIFT, which has long operated as a global OEM supporting other brands behind the scenes.
Project Alpha: The Forklift Industry’s First Open-Source Forklift
In a surprise announcement, Pedriana introduced Project Alpha, a bold move to create an open-source forklift platform.
“It’s the world’s first open-source forklift… so counterintuitive to the industry.”
Project Alpha aims to reduce the total cost of ownership of a lithium-powered 5,000 lb pneumatic forklift—currently the most common model globally. Even more groundbreaking is its twin: an identical IC truck that shares the same supply chain and can later retrofit to electric.
This approach drives down parts costs and allows for broader experimentation and innovation. Open-sourcing the project invites the industry to participate in improving the platform; a move that echoes successful tech-sector models and challenges the industry’s traditionally closed-off, IP-protected approach.
Fostering Innovation Through Startups and Strategic Partnerships
NOBLELIFT isn’t stopping with the forklift industry. Pedriana also supports innovation through Blue Dojo AI, a platform helping young AI startups break into the supply chain sector. One such startup, Tendrel.io, offers warehouse visibility solutions for just $30/month—an example of democratizing innovation.
“It’s really not a commercial thing. It’s about advancing and accelerating and connecting people.”
In another major reveal, Pedriana announced a new collaboration with Gather AI. As part of that partnership, NOBLELIFT is offering free installation of Gather AI’s vision system on its equipment through the end of the year. This effort showcases how Pedriana walks the talk by investing in others, fostering the next wave of innovation, and delivering practical value to customers.
